Douglas Chandler Helps Lead ICLE Mentoring Seminar on Legal Ethics, Publishes White Paper
Douglas Chandler of Chandler Law LLC, along with Aubrey Smith of ProAssurance, presented at the August 2012 Institute of Continuing Legal Education (ICLE) Group Mentioning session. The focus of the interactive presentation was Professional Liability and Bar Complaints: Preventing, Covering and Resolving Issues.
Chandler discussed ways to identify and avoid potential issues through effective client screening, engagement, communication, billing and file management. Smith provided an overview of professional liability insurance, including Georgia legal malpractice claim statistics that support the need for lawyers to have good Errors & Omissions coverage.
“I enjoy helping new lawyers build the basic skills required to succeed while maintaining the highest ethical standards,” Chandler commented. “The seminar case studies really help encourage new lawyers to read the Georgia Rules of Professional Conduct and discuss the issues presented with their mentors. Understanding and discussing the rules helps cement the importance of using documented business practices and processes to prevent legal malpractice and Bar complaint issues.”
Chandler and Smith also published a white paper on the same subject, entitled An Ounce of Prevention is Worth a Pound of Cure: A Primer in Risk Management, Ethics and Professional Liability. These ICLE Group Mentoring sessions are part of the Transition Into Law Practice Program that helps new lawyers acquire the practical skills, judgment and professional values to practice law in a highly competent manner. The Program is run by the State Bar of Georgia under the direction of Tangela S. King.
